Students will identify insects (including immature forms), answer questions about them, and use or build a dichotomous key. All insects featured are native to North America, north of Mexico.

EARTH & SPACE SCIENCE
Dynamic Planet (Hydrology)
Teams will use process skills in this event to complete tasks about freshwater on Earth.
Meteorology (Climate)
In this test event, teams will use quantitative analysis and processing skills to answer questions and interpret data, graphs, charts, or images related to world climate/climate change.
Participants will answer interpretive questions using various types of maps and images, such as state highway maps, USGS topographic maps, internet-based maps, road atlases, and satellite or aerial imagery.
teams identify and classify fossils while showing their understanding of ancient life, ecosystems, adaptations, evolution, and how fossils are used to date and correlate rock layers.
Reach for the Stars
Teams will be tested on their understanding of the late-stage evolution of stars, stellar remnants, and the electromagnetic spectrum.

PHYSICAL SCIENCE & CHEMISTRY
Potions and poisons
In this event, teams will be tested on their understanding of toxic household chemicals, plants, and creatures. Teams will also perform a chemistry lab task.
Crime Busters
A lab and test event in which teams will collect data, perform tests, and analyze evidence from a mock crime scene to solve a crime.
Metric Mastery
In this event, teams will estimate then measure the physical properties of identical objects. Teams will also perform unit conversions.
Optics
In this event, teams will participate in activity involving positioning mirrors to direct a light beam towards a target and complete a test on the principles of geometric and physical optics.

TECHNOLOGY & ENGINEERING
Mission Possible
Teams design, build and test a Rube Goldberg-like device which completes a series of small, specific actions to accomplish a task.
Scrambler
In this event, teams design, build, and test a mechanical device that uses the energy of a falling object to move a vehicle. The vehicle must quickly transport an egg as close as possible to a barrier without breaking the egg.
Tower
In this event, teams design and build a tower that meets design requirements and achieves the highest structural efficiency.
Helicopter
In this engineering challenge event, teams will design, build, and test free-flight rubber-powered helicopters that maximize their time in the air.

INQUIRY & NATURE OF SCIENCE
Experimental Design
Teams will design, conduct, and report the results of a scientific experiment from start to finish in a limited time frame.
Write It Do It
A technical writing exercise where teams write a description of a contraption and other teams will attempt to recreate it using only the written description.
Code Busters
Teams will decrypt and analyze encoded messages using cryptanalysis techniques for both historical and modern ciphers.
Teams will estimate and measure properties of identical objects—such as mass, volume, density, and more, and perform metric unit conversions.

State Level Additional Events
Road Scholar
In this test event, teams will be assessed on their knowledge of state highway maps, topographical maps, road atlas or satellite/aerial images.

In this event, teams will be tested on their abilities to identify and classify fossils while completing tasks relating to interpreting past environments and ecosystems, evolutionary relationships, and using fossils to date rock units.
Fossils
Entomology
Teams will classify insects and answer questions about the effects of various insect species on the economy and human health
